Twenty-One Seconds
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: PG
Character: Michael Corner
Warnings: Written in
thanfiction's DAYD universe. Spoilers for DAYD. Angst.
Summary: Of all the things that could have been.
Words: 312
Notes: I didn't manage to get an entry done for
daydverse's Battle of Hogwarts contest so instead I'm sharing this little gift drabble with everyone.
It could have been different. The wind in the night air could have been a little stronger, the sounds a little clearer, the hands a little steadier. He wouldn't have sent anyone else, not when it was his job and when he was sure he could deliver. He would have gone, of that there was no question, but something else could have changed.
He could have taken a little longer or he could have been quicker. He could have been as fast as he usually was, as focused… he could have been surprised. They had been preparing for surprise all year and if he'd had the chance he could have reacted.
He could have been higher or lower. He could have lingered a little less, not sparing the time to grin at Terry to converse with Neville. His words could have been swifter, more precise. The lock of hair that had fallen over his forehead could have stayed back and the shiver of anticipation he had felt could have lasted longer. He could have gotten pass that.
There were spells he could have tried. Many spells he knew and had developed over the year, especially for this, for this moment. He could have cast them flawlessly with a cool mind and a quick wand. He could have come up with plans, leading even if he wasn't particularly comfortable with the job, and people would have listened.
He could have used the muscles he had trained. He could have ran, stood and fought, on his feet, on his broom, strong from months of strain, strong of mind and body. Firm, steady like he had never been before or shaking and scared but there, present, willing.
He could have helped. He could have seen Terry again.
Twenty-one seconds and Michael fell. There was no time to wonder about the things that could have been.
